“Sicario” means hitman in Spanish. With a title like that the expectations are high for an action packed killing spree. What we get instead is a very cerebral, intense play-by-play blow from an insider’s perspective that evidences the corrupt methods used to gain an advantage in the war against drugs.
It comes as no surprise that the United States will use “any means necessary” combat drug trafficking and the drug cartel in Mexico that is known for killing innocent men, women and children. What is surprising is how Villeneuve (best known for Prisoners and Enemy) pulls the audience into this taut, tense thriller by giving you a first person shooter advantage, drawing you into the depths of paranoia.
The opening scene alone is one unbelievable, gory discovery led by FBI agent, Kate Macy (Emily Blunt) whose mission is to find a kidnapped victim. She’s the best at that and leads the FBI’s kidnapping team. She’s recruited to join a special task force led by Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) along with his right hand man, Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) to go into Mexico to capture the boss of a major drug cartel and bring him back to the US. At the outset, Kate is skeptical as to why she’s there and what her role is, yet she volunteers to go along to catch the monsters that kidnapped and killed over 25 people, including a few of her team members.
Once Kate joins the team, it’s interesting to note that a woman as accomplished as her couldn’t figure out the motives of the elite squad any sooner. What Villeneuve does well is slowly building the tension and giving the audience an intense realistic view of life in Mexico and the dangers within. I can forgive Villeneuve for the confusion that pervades Blunt’s character and the story if his intention is to keep the audience off balance to heighten the tension. I can forgive the holes in the story and lack of depth in his characters because the cinematography is beautiful. What I can’t forgive is that after two hours of white knuckles anticipation for the action packed killfest I was expecting because of the opening scene that the movie boils down to Kate taking a stance for her idealistic and moralistic values, right vs. wrong. I felt shortchanged and disheartened despite the authenticity of the chase.
Overall, the performances were good, Blunt’s emotionally flawed character was believable and Brolin’s Graver had the swagger you come to expect in his roles, but the pleasant surprise was Del Toro. As usual his brooding, monosyllabic performance is the norm, but his morose style was entertaining. And yes, he is the missing piece to that otherwise convoluted governmental puzzle.
Sicario is an entertaining and suspenseful film that drops you into the world of drug cartels and government secret agendas that is overshadowed by the cinematography which helped the story. It would be a better film is the best scene of the film wasn’t the opening scene. From there it’s a slow descent downhill.

DEAN BUTLER TALKS ABOUT LITTLE HOUSE AND WHAT IT MEANS…THEN AND NOW
As Almanzo Wilder on the beloved television series ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ Dean Butler reveals how the show changed his life, what it was like working with Michael Landon, and what he’s doing today.
Almanzo quickly became an integral part of life in Walnut Creek, with both Nellie (Arngrim) and Laura (Gilbert) vying to win his affections. Laura, of course, eventually won out, as Almanzo went on to marry her. Now, in honor of Lionsgate Home Entertainment’s release of the deluxe remastered Little House on the Prairie Complete Series, Butler talks about his time on the hit NBC series, working with Michael Landon and much more.
Q: When you joined the cast of Little House, did you have any sense of what a special show it was? That people would still be interested in it all these years later?
A: Interestingly, I don’t know that as members of the cast that we were aware of it, but Michael Landon was very aware of it. It would come up in conversations. He would say things like, “People will be watching this show long after so many other contemporary programs have been forgotten.”
I think he felt that the fundamental values that the show represented to people would resonate for a long period of time. They weren’t subject to fashion — although we did have some slightly ’80s hair on the men — but, basically, the shows were time capsules. They were old when they were new, so that made them timeless.
Q: Speaking of Michael, what was it like working with him?
A: Michael wore the four big hats you wear on a series: He was the executive producer, the star, the head writer, and the director. So he had his finger on the pulse of everything that we were doing. He had a crystal-clear vision about what we were trying to do. So people who love Little House can thank Michael Landon for his vision of what it was supposed to be.
He was really the sole voice. Obviously, NBC would send notes on scripts, but basically they were very modest, minor notes, and Michael did what he wanted to do regardless. I think it was a rare position to be in, because the show was so strong from a ratings perspective that I think that programming executives at NBC felt that Michael was a guy who could be trusted because he delivered week after week after week. So it was a very important piece of the peacock’s fortunes.
Q: Do you think Little House continues to resonate with audiences because it’s about family?
Well there’s no question … not only have they loved the television program, but the source material, the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Her eight novels, which she first wrote in 1932, resonate very powerfully about the American experience.
Our fan base is … I wouldn’t say it’s divided, but there are people who love Little House, who are really focused on the series. Then there’s a whole other group of people who love Little House, whose fascination with it is focused almost entirely on the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Then there is a hybrid group in the middle who love both.
Q: What are your thoughts on the legacy of Little House and this wonderful set being put out by Lionsgate?
A: I think it’s a tremendous opportunity for an entirely new generation of families to enjoy the program. Many are aware of it because it’s in syndication all around the world every day, but this beautifully done set will give people the opportunity to watch and enjoy the programs individually and at their own pace. I particularly enjoy the additional features contained in the set as they are so education and interesting. I am just excited to see the series remastered in such a way for everyone to enjoy. Whether you have seen the programs once or ten times, they look better now because the continued development of color correction. That process really exists on an entirely new level nowadays. I am in awe at just how beautiful the remastered series looks!
