Comicpalooza, the Texas International Comic Con, is the only four-day comic con in Texas and will be held this year May 22 – 25 in the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. The  annual convention  features a lot more than one thing: artists, writers, animators, celebrities, voice actors, film makers, scientists, astronauts, musicians, athletes, performers, costumer designers, prop makers, and with 1.1 million square feet of exhibit and event space, over 2,000 hours of programming, running from 10 am until 2 am, it is the largest pop-culture event in Texas after SXSW.   Get out and check out Comicpalooza! Here are just a few of the folks that will be in attendance at the event:

PERFORMERS

Big Data – an American electronic music project helmed by producer Alan Wilkis. They are best known for their single “Dangerous”, featuring Joywave, which reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in August 2014.

Descendants of Erdrick -Descendants of Erdrick is an Austin-based progressive-metal band dedicated to reimagining the soundtracks of classic video games, specializing in (but not limited to) games in the “epic” role-playing/adventure genre. The band’s repertoire covers soundtracks ranging from classic adventure franchises and games such as The Legend of ZeldaFinal FantasyChrono Trigger,Super Mario Bros and Secret of Mana, among others. The name of the band references the first-ever console JRPG, Dragon Warrior (also known as Dragon Quest).

The Returners – We love video games. We love music. We love putting these two things together in front of an audience. Formed in early 2013, the Returners are dreaming big. Within our first year, we’ve played Nerdapalooza 2013, plus several small local conventions, and we won’t stop anytime soon. More than anything, we want to share the music we love with people who will love it too. We’ve played music from the Sega Master System and the Sony Playstation. Our hearts eternally belong to the SNES.

Brothers Grymn – Exuding swagger and confidence by combining old school hip hop boastful lyrics, classic guitar riffs, a thundering beat and a modern electronic edge, Brothers Grymn has emerged a new favorite. Their debut album G was listed as one of the top independent releases of 2014 by the Houston Press. An army of sound, they play with a style, ferocity and boisterous attitude that is all their own.

Brumes – A horror-themed pop-punk band from Houston, Texas, that features a female lead vocalist over piano-driven rock. The band was formed in 2013, and after just a handful of regional shows, they are set to release their debut album, Monsters & Mysteries, on 4th Town Records later this year. Brumes is rapidly growing a national fan base via social and music networking, and is showing no signs of slowing down.

The MadMen Crew – a three-person hip hop group out of Houston, Texas. The crew measures up to an extensive scope of artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan and the Beastie Boys. Their influences are the four elements of hip hop and getting crowds hyped while performing onstage. Combined with witty rhymes that come correct, diverse and entertaining, the MadMen Crew’s hard work extends to the outer reaches to impact the hip hop community.

Only Beast Fueled by beer and loud noises, Houston’s favorite spaceteam Only Beast elbowed their way onto the rock scene in 2011 and burrowed into the hearts of weirdoes everywhere. A haunted freight train of sound, they’ve performed with a wide range of acts. They are convention veterans and are prepared to melt some faces this year with their inaugural con performance. The band’s very name was taken from the pages of a well-loved graphic novel, so this might just be the perfect venue for the fierce and chaotic business they intend to lay down.

The concept of a vast (infinite?) collection of parallel universes, of which our universe is but one, has been a theme in comic-dom/science fiction for decades. The scientific arguments in favor of some type of actual multiverse and the growing acceptance by both the scientific community and the general populous of its existence will be reviewed. The range of possible types of multiverses that may exist, as classified by cosmologist Max Tegmark, will be reviewed.

Trace Putin’s career back two decades to his political start in St. Petersburg, where allegations of corruption began almost immediately. The film chronicles Putin’s ascent as Boris Yeltsin’s chosen successor, examines his controversial ties to former German Chancellor Gerhardt Schroeder, and revisits the horrific 1999 Moscow apartment bombings – which continue to haunt the country, with unanswered questions about the role of Russian security services and Putin s complicity. From a senior police officer who tried to arrest Putin on corruption charges, to an investigator who tried to investigate the apartment bombings, to former writers and documentarians hired to burnish his reputation, Putin’s Way offers key players’ accounts portraying a Russian leader who began by professing hope and democracy but now is stoking nationalism, conflict, authoritarianism, and a complicated relationship with the West.

BEN FRANKLIN’S BONES – PBS

Just off the Strand in London, at 36 Craven Street, is an elegant, four-story Georgian townhouse with a very important place in the history of the United States. As the Colonial ambassador to the British Colony of America, Benjamin Franklin lived and worked here for nearly 20 years during the 18th century. But two centuries later, the Craven Street house revealed a shocking history when a group of U.S. historians bought it for a museum and builders started the renovation in the basement. Work quickly stopped when over 1,200 bones from at least 10 bodies were discovered. The police were called and the house was cordoned off. Tests proved that the bones dated back to the mid-18th century to the time Franklin was in residence. Benjamin Franklin, a Founding Father, one of the most eminent thinkers and scientists of the 18th century Enlightenment, was a suspect. Careful investigation of the bones determined these were not victims of a serial killer but of another sinister act, and that others were implicated. Franklin knew very well that while he was upstairs drawing up the blueprint for an American republic, an illegal anatomy school run by his great friend, the brilliant young anatomist William Hewson, was thriving in the basement. BEN FRANKLIN’S BONES solves a modern mystery born in the dark fringes of the Age of Enlightenment, showing how illegal grave robbing practices taking place right beneath Benjamin Franklin’s feet proved invaluable to the advancement of medical science.

Now they must hunt down the voracious beast… before they become its next prey!
